Autograf X SNBRN + Webster Hall = VIBES
On May 30th of the year 2015, I drove a combined 13 hours from Virginia to New York, and witnessed what can only be described as one of the deepest shows of all time. Honestly, I think my body’s still buzzing from the sheer depth of the evening. The two acts provided exactly enough bass to kill a 3 year old squirrel, and literally rattled Webster Hall like an infant violently shaking a pair of maracas.
My night began just like everybody else’s, drinking Cîroc on a yacht and raging with my friends over at Deep Root Records (shout out Francis Mercier & MEMBA). After a quick cab ride and near altercation with the bouncer, I found myself inside the glorious Webster Hall. Glorious might be a bit of an overstatement, however they do seem to draw some of the best dance acts from around the world. Either way, after a quick RBV, I maneuvered my way to the front of the venue.
Autograf appeared around 12:30am with Louis manning the CDJ‘s, and Jake perched behind the electric marimba. The live interplay between the two wildly different instruments was fascinating to watch, and added an indescribable intimacy to the performance. The marimba isn’t exactly a powerful instrument, however, when combined with synthesized sounds and performed live, the instrument transcends tropical novelty and emerges as a bastion of hope in the widening sea of pre-recorded sets and model DJ’s.
Autograf’s stunning french-house remix of Alesso’s perfect pop tune, “Cool”
After playing a few of their hit remixes (Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition“, and Swedish House Mafia’s “One“), the duo unleashed a killer live solo over ODESZA‘s huge track “Memories That You Call (feat. Monsoonsiren)“. When I thought things couldn’t get any better, the electric djembe found its way onto the stage….which Jake proceeded to play like a seasoned African tribesman. Autograf’s set ended with their first original track “Dream“, and a brief performance of their remix of ODESZA’s “All We Need“.
At 1:45am I found myself virtually out of breath and in desperate need of some sort of hydrating beverage. This brief moment of lucidity was gladly interrupted by the booming echoes of SNBRN‘s Karli featured hit, “Raindrops“. The huge original absolutely annihilated the venue, forcing any static attendees to throw on their dancing shoes. What proceeded was a solid 2 hours of sweaty fist pumping and wild screaming. Every human on the premises experienced the harsh UV rays sonically exemplified in SNBRN’s distinct brand of sunset house. The set was quite an experience thanks to the inclusion of tracks from the likes of Earth Wind & Fire, The Who, Oliver Heldens, and Corona.
SNBRN’s heavy remix of ASTR’s “Activate Me”
The night wrapped up around 4 am, at which point I found myself chilling with SNBRN himself. Such a genuine guy. I told him I’d been a fan since the Ace of Base remix, and he proceeded to give me a substantial, yet undoubtedly surprising bear hug. Overall, it was an incredible, bass-heavy night which ended in the East Village with a few hours sleep in the smallest apartment I’d ever set foot inside.
