Top 5 EDM Vocalists of 2014

Having vocals on your track seems to be a surefire way for a massive hit these days.  Because of the growing popularity of vocalists on EDM productions, I wanted to break down the top 5 EDM vocalists of 2014…so far.

Top 5 EDM Vocalists of 2014

1. Heather Bright

Heather-Bright

Heather Bright is a singer/songwriter originating from South Carolina.  She first found success writing for artists such as Ashley Tisdale, Far East Movement, Britney Spears and Justin Bieber.  She began providing vocals for electro/house music, and has been a feature on major DJ’s recordings like Zedd, Porter Robinson, and Bingo Players. In 2013, Hardwell’s hit “Never Say Goodbye” blasted onto the scene and has received massive airplay well into 2014.  In March, DJ 3lau released “How You Love Me” featuring Bright, which has been climbing up the charts, and even more recently, Dutch DJ Dannic released “Dear Life” featuring the American singer.  Because of these recent massively popular song, Heather Bright takes the first spot on the list.

2. Eva Simons

Originating from the Netherlands, Eva Simons is a singer/songwriter that has had a relatively successful career thus far.  She truly made a name for herself after being featured on Afrojack’s monumental hit, “Take Over Control.” After the success of the song, industry powerhouses like LMFAO and will.i.am featured her on their productions.  She takes the number two spot on the list because of her multiple 2014 features.  Simons provides vocals for Electro pop duo The Young Professional’s, “Let’s Do It Right” as well as EDM hit-maker R3hab’s “Unstoppable.”  Simons is also receiving massive airplay with her latest production “Celebrate The Rain” with Dutch DJ powerhouse, Sidney Samson.

3. Lana Del Rey

Alternative pop singer/songwriter, Lana Del Rey lands in the number three position for the top EDM vocalists of 2014.  Although her genre technically is not classified as any style of Electronic Dance Music, her voice seems to go hand-in-hand with the genre. In 2013, French DJ Cedric Gervais remixed her track, “Summertime Sadness.” Gervais’ version went platinum and even infiltrated the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. Chicago born DJ Kaskade also remixed Del Rey’s, “Young and Beautiful” which became a giant success and received massive radio play as well.  Del Rey makes the list because her album, Ultraviolence, was released on June 13th, and it’s only a matter of time until a popular EDM DJ remixes one of her songs. All I know is I can’t wait to see where this incredible songstress ends up.

4. Ellie Goulding

English singer Ellie Goulding shattered the Earth with her 2011 single, “Lights.” The track has sold over four million copies to date, and climbed up to the number two spot on the Billboard Hot 100.  After the massive success of the song, Goulding became a household name in the Electronic Dance Music Industry pretty rapidly.  She teamed up to create tracks with incredibly popular DJ’s like Skrillex and Calvin Harris, and has continued to release commercially successful singles like “Anything Could Happen” and 2013’s “Burn” that boasted an incredibly popular remix by British DJ Mat Zo. In 2014, Goulding released “Beating Heart,” which was one of the lead tracks for one of the most highly anticipated film releases of the year, Divergent. Since Goulding has embarked on a massive tour, the success of “Beating Heart” and plans for an upcoming album, the British singer/songwriter snags the fourth spot on the list.

5. Matthew Koma

Arguably the most sought-after vocalist in Electronic Dance Music, American singer/songwriter Matthew Koma has had a pretty jam-packed 2014 year.  Brooklyn born Koma blasted into the music scene after being featured on German DJ Zedd’s monstrous 2012 single, “Spectrum.” The track catapulted Koma into his career, and he has since been featured on productions from the likes of powerhouse DJ’s Hardwell, Alesso, and Fedde le Grande. However, the features do not stop there. Since late 2013, Koma has been featured on nearly 10, yes 10, productions.  Superstar DJ’s Afrojack and Tiesto clearly couldn’t get enough of the vocalist. Koma appears on two tracks in both of their 2014 album releases. It seems like everything this guy touches turns to gold, so I cannot wait to see where he is featured next.

Vocalists To Watch

 John Martin

You may not know his name, but you definitely know his voice. John Martin is a singer/songwriter originating from Sweden. Martin is the voice behind Swedish House Mafia’s incredibly giant hits, “Save The World” and “Don’t You Worry Child.” Combined, the songs sold millions worldwide.  The Swedish vocalist was also featured on Sebastian Ingrosso and Tommy Trash’s hit, “Reload” and British rapper Tinie Tempah’s, “Children of the Sun.” Because of the success of these tracks, Martin released his debut single, “Anywhere For You” in 2014, and his follow up single is reportedly titled, “Love Louder” which is set to be released on June 29th. Big things seem to be coming from Martin, so keep an eye out for him in this coming year.

Foxes

You may know Foxes, the British singer/songwriter, from her vocals in Zedd’s 2013 smash, “Clarity.” The song made a huge impact on the Billboard Hot 100 and went platinum in the United States selling over two million copies. In 2014, the “Clarity” songstress released her debut album, Glorious. The album’s first single, “Youth” was remixed by Canadian electro duo, Adventure Club, and by American twosome Disco Fries, which received solid radio play.  The singer’s voice seems to fit perfectly with Electronic Dance Music, so I am excited to see further productions or features from her.

JES

American singer/songwriter JES is a definite OG in the Electric Dance Music industry.  JES has been providing stellar vocals on tracks of her own and as a feature since the early 2000’s. After being signed to Tiesto’s record label in 2006, JES has found great success and has released multiple albums. She consistently revolutionizes the way we hear vocals on records, and continues to produce smashes like 2014’s “Runaway” with Cold Blue and Dennis Sheperd. I cannot wait to hear new music from this girl, as I’m sure it will be nothing like we have heard before.
