Freaknight Artist Spotlight: Mt Eden

Mt Eden

Few artists can move a crowd the way Mt Eden does each and every time they step up to the decks. Jesse Cooper and Harley Rayner, better known as Mt Eden, have been a driving force in the electronic scene for a while now. Most widely known for their track called “Sierra Leone,” Mt Eden are masters of hard bass, whimsical melodies, and vocals that evoke feels down to your core, and now they are gracing the stages of Freaknight 2014 in what is surely to be a set to remember.

Mt Eden hasn’t been to Seattle since last year’s “Freakweek” where they threw down at Foundation Nightclub in what is still one of the top nights there in my mind. Before that, they put on an incredible sunset set at Paradiso where I got my first chance to see the duo live.  No words really can describe the raw emotion these two are able to convey through their music. It isn’t just something you hear, it is something you feel. This may have something to do with most of their tracks consisting of beautiful bass melodies, but I really think it is something more than that. Mt Eden are one of the few bass artists whose songs evoke emotions that go deeper than “Ooh, that drop,” or “I feel my bones rattling.” Their tracks are emotionally charged and passionate unlike any other bass artist I’ve heard, and that is exactly why they are a must see at this year’s Freaknight.

I credit Mt Eden solely on sparking my love of bass music and dubstep. Sierra Leone is an all-time great not just for bass music, but electronic music in general. Their more recent tracks aren’t overshadowed by “Sierra Leone” though. “Airwalker,” “Flipmode,” “Where is My Mind,” and “Second Chance” are all fantastic and really show off the fact that Mt Eden is much more than a one trick pony. Their sets are equally as magical, and I cannot wait to see them for a third time on October 31st. They are the artist who I am most excited to see perform, and I hope you join me in witnessing what is sure to be one of the best performances.

From LA to Seattle, the West Coast has always been my home and I take great pride in the music scene we have here. Bass music is my first love, but in reality I love and appreciate all types of music...besides country. Let the music talk. You just have to be ready to listen.
