INSANE pres. CUARTERO / HECTOR CUOTO & MAR T @ Pacha Barcelona Review
It’s fair to say that the Pacha name is equated with glossy cherries, glam clubbing, and VIP culture in Ibiza. But it is also important to note the Barcelona arm of the world famous brand is far more underground in its ideals. Right now, one of the flagship nights at the club is Insane, which offers a taste of the White Isle experience in the Catalan capital, but they also offer many other great nights such as the one just gone.
Headlining was a fine combination of underground house stars Cuartero, Hector Cuoto and Mar T, who in fact is the resident at Amnesia and a real Ibiza legend. The club itself is massive and that strokes you as soon as you walk it. It means the whole party has a certain sense of scale and awesomeness that really makes it an extra special experience. The whole club is beamed down upon by a raised DJ booth off to one side, that allows us all to worship at it, and then bits of the building’s infrastructure is visible in the form of vast white tubes that spread out all around. There are also big pillars breaking up the dance floor and there is never a moment without some brilliant light or laser cutting up the floor and adding an extra dimension to the sounds. Those sounds come out of speaker stacks that really rattle your ribs and have crisp hi hats up top. No matter where you are stood there is a perfect sound hitting your eardrums and it means that the floor is bumping in all corners. The people making up the crowd are friendly and happy to get loose. They are all dressed in casual clothes and there is none of the seediness in the men that you might expect in some European clubs (and London to be fair).
The real standout set came from Cuartero. Cuartero has only been producing since 2011, but in just a few short years he has established himself as a global player in the house world. His DJ sets are compelling things full of dynamic grooves, and his bulky, robust productions are just as stand out, and that was the case tonight. Filled with tunes form labels like Desolat, Hot Creations and Knee Deep In Sound he kept the floor a sweaty, intense place full of free-moving bodies.
Hector Cuoto was just as slick in the booth, going the dots between tech house beats with greta pace and balance, and Mar T was never less than fully in control of the club. His big main room sounds rained down on hands in the air ravers and left a big impression on both them and us. Pacha Barcelona is well worth a visit whenever you are in town.
