Kotelett & Zadak [Interview]
Kotelett & Zadak is a Berlin-based duo with a seriously witty sense of humour. Friends for some time, they first met through a mutual appreciation of quality house music and they’ve since gone on to form ties with esteemed labels such as Katermukke, Ritter Butzke Studio and most pertinently, Swiss label Hive Audio. With their latest having just dropped on the label, we caught up with them to find out more…

OTB: Was Germany a good place to experience electronic music as a teenager? What were your first experiences of it all?
K & Z: Absolutely! We grew up with Kraftwerk and all these early electronic pioneers and the charts as a teenager were full of these funny Euro dance tracks of the 90s.
Do you think it’s better or worse than it used to be there for house music these days? Or just different?
K & Z: We think it’s just different. There is a new generation with another idea of house music. In the early 2000s, the people made house parties in warehouses and there was an industrial feeling. Today, a lot of house clubs are small and with a wooden interior that makes for a totally different atmosphere.
So where are the best clubs to go to if we’re visiting then?
K & Z: We can only say it for Berlin and there it depends on what you want, but for clubbing with long afterhours it’s hard to beat Berghain, Katerblau, Renate and Golden Gate. But every week you can find little bars or clubs that are also really good and surprising.
Are there ever times where you struggle for inspiration then? What do you do in those instances?
Kotelett: I only struggle when I feel under pressure, so the only way for me is to make sure I take my time.
How do you push one another then? Do you motivate and inspire one another at all?
K & Z: Talking, talking, talking and coffee…so much coffee!!
What do you consider your proudest moment as a production outfit to date?
Kotelett: For me, it´s ‘Moonside of the Dark`, with the basslines and the pad in the break. It wasn´t easy to arrange this, because it´s built of various layers, but that’s what made the production interesting and gives them a good flow.
And aside from yourself, what other German DJs should we be looking out for?
K & Z: Not Soukie and Windish anyway! We share our studio with them and they never clean the dishes and they have more Facebook friends. But as DJs they are quite good.
This is the second time you’ve appeared on HIVE. So how did this one come about?
K & Z: Very unspectacularly. We like each other, and every time when we finish some tracks and we think they could like it, we show it to them. I like the label, cause every release is really solid and well produced.
Did the EP end up as you hoped it would? Or do you generally go off on tangents when you’re producing?
K & Z: We don´t have a plan for the next EP, we just focus on the actual project and later on we look for what fits together.
Are you very picky about where your music gets signed to? Is it important that the label has a similar ethos to yourself?
K & Z: In the beginning it wasn´t important for me, but after a lot of experience within the scene, it´s getting more and more important. We only work with people that we trust and like now. It´s necessary to support each other, the label and the artist. We made some mistakes in the past with one or two labels, so right now we are very careful.
Do you go out clubbing much these days? Who was the last DJ/producer to really impress you in that regard?
Zadak: Sometimes we go clubbing after a gig but mostly we spend some time in the club where we played and go back to home or the hotel. There is not a certain DJ or producer who impressed me, but there are a lot of young and good DJs who are impressing me.
And what’s your involvement like in the scene at home?
K & Z: When we play in Berlin, we often go to another club to finish the night because the scene in berlin is why I started with the music. It´s different from the beginning but I still love it.
What constitutes success for you as a producer? Who influences your work the most?
Zadak: The secret is to constantly reinvent ourselves.
If you could produce on one other label and with one other producer, what would they be and why?
Kotelett: I will produce with George Michael on Warner Bros. A new `Last Christmas’ song to get an ass full of money.
If you were stuck on a desert island, what would you bring?
And what albums will you bring?
Kotelett: Mort Garson- ‘Plantasia’- warm earth music for plants and people who love them
What’s next for you that you’re particularly excited about?
Zadak: Kotelett´s holidays on a desert island.
