Chris Lake Gives “California” a Deep Makeover

If you grew up in the 80s or 90s, then chances are you know the iconic 2Pac and Dr. Dre track, “California.” When we heard up-and-coming, LA-based producer, SNBRN, remix the 2Pac classic last summer, our jaws dropped listening to the track that defined so many of our formative years. Now, house producer¬†Chris Lake¬†is showing off his rejuvenated sound, teaming up with Croative-native, Matroda, to take on SNBRN’s deep re-imagination of the hip-hop classic and bring it further into the underground.

Last summer, SNBRN tabbed the talented Kaleena Zanders to rework the vocal melody of 2Pac and Dre’s original, and she delivered a stunning product. Chris Lake and Matroda take Zanders’ soulful vocals and pitch them up, turning the attention away from Zanders’ croons and towards the reworked production. Lake and Matroda give “California” new life, with stunning synth leads and a fat bass line that takes SNBRN’s tropical-rendition of the 2Pac classic to the main stage.

Editors note: Chris Lake’s genre focus was changed to house, not Melbourne bounce as previously stated
