We recently got the opportunity to talk to Marcus Schossow about his North America Tour, his Icona Pop remix, and much much more! Read the interview below and you'll see how he has one of the most refreshing takes on the current state of music that we've seen in a while!
OTB: What is the most outrageous thing on your rider?
MS: A secret ninja standing silently in a corner.
OTB: What is the craziest story you have from your recent North American tour?
MS: Ending up in a straight up fifa battle 6am in the hoods of Ottawa?
OTB: What is your favorite venue that you've played at in North America? How about favorite crowd?
MS: Webster Hall and New City Gas. The crowds because of all the energy they give!
Not too long ago, Marcus released his remix of Icona Pop's "Just Another Night" (And hot diggety is it a fantastic track!), so we had to ask him a few questions about that as well. Give it a listen while you hear what he has to say!
OTB: How much do communication did you have with Icona Pop when you were making the remix?
MS: None, I don't showcase anyone my work until its done :)
OTB: Is there anything you really wanted to preserve from the original song, and just had to have be a big part of the remix?
MS: I only used the vocals to be honest, the rest I created myself. I wanted to give the vocals a chance to be in a new environment with another scale of chords.
OTB: What you you say defines your sound? How did you go about finding it?
MS: I guess melodic house with funky basslines! I kinda look at what everyone else is doing and then I avoid doing the same.... Then I add a little soul to it. That's my secret, haha.
OTB: What do you have in store for us in 2014? Any big plans or releases we can look for?
MS: All I can say is that I have an amazing thing coming out on revealed records this spring! :)
OTB: Do you have any special pre or post-show rituals?
MS: A couple of Jeager shots!
OTB: Dream question—if you could have any residency in any club in the world, where would it be?
MS: Nothing is magical if you do it 12th times in a row ;)
OTB: Do you have any advice for up-and-coming DJs and producers?
MS: Don't fuck up and believe in your first original ideas.
OTB: How do you keep your music collection up-to-date?
MS: My weekly radio show keeps me on track!
OTB: Where do you see dance music headed through the next year? Do you like where it’s headed? What do you think of the current “big-room-house” craze among people newer to the dance music scene?
MS: I think the current "bang bang hardcore kick house" ghost produced crap out there is slowly going away and that people are getting fed up with the same shit over and over again. Indie house is going to be big, and believe me, it's coming, the whole deep house trend is just the start of it.
OTB: Our last question for you - what is the best advice that you've ever received?
MS: "Do what you do and the sky is the limit" - Armin van Buuren on chat a few years back.
While you're here, make sure to also check out Marcus' latest remix of Coldplay, available for FREE!
A big thanks to Marcus and his management for helping set this up and coordinate the interview! Make sure to stay on the lookout for the "amazing thing" coming from Marcus this Spring!
