Interview with The Junkies
New School Tech duo, The Junkies, have been a mainstay in the Toronto club scene for over 10 years. Regulars on Rawthentic, SCI+TEC, MOOD, Intec as well as their own imprint Local Music, they’ve held residencies at the legendary Guvernment Nightclub as well as Footwork Bar. Recently, The Junkies have gone on tour to showcase their music, playing alongside some of the world’s most respected artists including Dubfire, Marco Carola, Paco Osuna and Loco Dice. They will be playing at Primary Nightclub in Chicago, Saturday, May 9 as a part of Reverse Events’ Tech(no) Club Series alongside Spybar resident Dustin Sheridan and Bucky Fargo.
I plan to see them tonight in Chicago, and have been afforded the opportunity to ask them a few questions:
What does your daily routine look like? Are you producing everyday? Take some time and walk us through your creative process as well as what you like to do to blow off steam.
We’d love to make music every day but it’s not always easy. The creative process changes all the time but the basics are usually to start with are a good kick and bass drum. From there it can really go any way. Like most people, we usually just blow off steam by sitting and catching up on some of our fave shows.
How do you keep your music collection up-to-date?
We try to go through Beatport and promos weekly. It’s not easy these days with so much music out there, but we try our best to keep up.
How would you define your “sound?”
New School Tech
If you could make any other type of music, what would it be?
Are there particular artists or sounds that you see as the future of edm?
Hard to tell really. Things move so fast these days. There are new artists popping up all the time and new genres of music too. We try not to think too much about all that and just focus on what we’re doing and the direction we want to go in.
Who are your top 5 favorite producers?
- DJ Premiere
- Noah 40
- Armand Van Helden
- Giorgio Moroder
Is there a song or artist or even album that was most influential to you?
Depeche Mode – Violator
If there was any artist you could produce a song with right now who would it be?
Drake. He has been pushing the envelope when it comes to Hip Hop music. We are huge fans and would love to collaborate with him someday.
If you could have any residency in any club in the world, where would it be?
Hard to pick one but think it would have to be Womb in Tokyo. Everything about that place is amazing and the city is unbelievable. It would be a dream come true to play that room on the regular.
Do you have any pre/post-show rituals?
Not really. We usually grab a light bite to eat and try to relax before if we can. After the show it all depends on if theres an after party going on or if we have an early flight to catch.
What are your biggest pet peeves?
You’re still primarily based in Toronto, what keeps you there? Is it the scene? If so, what’s it like?
Family and friends for sure. Toronto’s scene is as vibrant as ever. There is so much going on here that its hard to just stay in an take a night off. We’re really spoiled to be honest. There’s really no down time here.
What do you see as some of the biggest challenges that the dance music scene faces these days? How can we work to improve the culture?
This whole EDM and underground war will always be the big one. People just need to get over it all and have a good time.
What does 2015 have in store for us? New Releases? Tour Dates? Podcasts?
We have a bunch of new releases in the works for the main labels we work with such as SCI+TEC, MOOD and Intec as well as a few remixes on the go for Transmit, KD RAW, Kraftek plus a few others. We’ll be touring North and South America mainly but we’ll be in Eurupe during the summer. We’re always uploading mixes and making guest appearances for podcasts so it’s best to just follow us on social media to keep up to date with it all.
