Behind the Beat: Joey Dale
Imagine getting a text message from a world-renowned DJ/producer complimenting a track that you tried to get signed to his/her record label. That is exactly what happened to Joey Dale.
Dale started producing when he was 14-years-old and has continued his rise in the industry producing tracks alongside powerhouses like DVBBS and Alvaro. His unique sound as both a DJ and producer caught the ear of Hardwell and Revealed Recordings and is now considered to be one of Hardwell’s proteges. He talks about his start, festivals and more with OTB.
Only The Beat: Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get involved in DJing and producing? What was your first breakout show?
Joey Dale: I got involved into producing when I was 14-years-old and I got the demo version of Fruity Loops. I first started making Hip-Hop beats because I was really into Hip-Hop. Later, I got into House music when I went out with friends and thought, this sounds so minimal but so effective, I wanna make this too! After 5 years of practicing, I signed my first track to Revealed and after that everything started. My first big show was in Portugal a few months later, I opened at RFM SOMNII for almost 15,000 people.
OTB: Tell us a little bit about being involved with Hardwell and Revealed Recordings.
JD: That started around 2 years ago when I sent my tracks to the label and A&R. They liked my tracks but it wasn’t good enough to release it yet. A few days later, I got a message that Hardwell really liked it and wanted to release it! That made my day, or maybe better, my whole life. From that moment on I started releasing my music on Revealed, because it best fits my music. I’m really proud to be part of the family!
OTB: You recently released the track ‘Where Dreams Are Made’, which reached Beatport Top 15 Progressive chart. Can you share any insights about your experience creating this track and accompanying music video?
JD: The track first started with a different vocal. I heard it and fell in love with the chords of the demo vocal and I began working on it and after 3 days the whole track was done. I sent it to Revealed but they didn’t like the original vocals. That’s when I looked into my older files and found this beautiful vocal ‘Where Dreams Are Made’. It fit perfectly and I knew it could be big! I sent it to Revealed again and Hardwell personally messaged me on WhatsApp that he loved the track and had it on repeat. For the music video we wanted to do something with footage of my last 2 years of touring. The title is ‘Where Dreams Are Made’ and all the footage, which was shot all over the world, really shows the places where dreams were made for me. Two years ago, I could only dream about doing all this stuff.

OTB: What other artists influence your style and who do you follow in the industry?
JD: I really look up to Alesso, Martin Garrix, Hardwell and W&W. They really do what I love, their shows are insane and their productions too.
OTB: What is your favorite track that you produced and one that you did not produce, but admire?
JD: My favorite track I produced is Arcadia, my collab with Hardwell. That track put my name on the map and I’m really thankful that I could make a track with Hardwell in the early stages of my career. A track I didn’t produce but really admire has got to be Reload by Sebastian Ingrosso and Tommy Trash. I think it’s one of the best tracks ever made and it doesn’t matter if you played it in 2012 or in 2022, it’s timeless.

OTB: You have played major festivals like Tomorrowland with massive crowds. What has been your favorite festival or venue so far?
JD: Tomorrowland for sure! But my favorite gig so far was Magnetic Festival in Prague. The best crowd ever.
OTB: What is a personal milestone in your DJ/producing career so far?
JD: My track with Hardwell, Arcadia, which put me on the map and playing at Tomorrowland two times already. Both things I could never have dreamed of in the beginning.
OTB: Outside of Djing, what are your other interests or hobbies?
JD: I really love to workout! I go to the gym everyday for two hours and just forget about everything for a few hours. Also going out with friends has got to be my favorite thing in life.
OTB: What can we expect from you this year? Any big shows, mixes or collaborations coming up?
JD: I made a LOT of new music for the coming months! Also doing a lot of Revealed shows all over the world so I’ll see you all out there. 😉
