Behind the Beat: Oliver Caine
Memorial Day weekend for music lovers is pretty much the start of our beloved festival season. Here at OTB, we are headed to Detroit for the 10th edition of Movement Electronic Music Festival. And let’s be honest here, not only will the festival be incredible but the pre-parties and after-parties will be too. We are part of a few events in the Motor City that weekend including a boat party on Sunday, May 29th that our friend Oliver Caine is playing.
Born and raised in Washington D.C., Caine found a passion for music at a very young age. As a veteran in the underground scene, more specifically Techno, he has played along side the best of the best including Chris Liebing, Joseph Capriati, Victor Calderone, Paco Osuna and Carlo Lio. Ahead of the big day, we wanted to get know him a little more and learn what makes him tick when it comes to producing.
Only The Beat: So, how did you get into dance music? Do you have previous experience in other genres?
Oliver Caine: I got into dance music from friends that were in the scene that would always take me out in Miami. Being a musician, it took a while for the electronic bug to catch on, but once it did, I was hooked. I’ve played bass or drums in just about every genre of music you can think of, from Death Metal to Bluegrass, and everything in between, so I have quite an extensive knowledge of music.
OTB: So your experience in other genres makes me wonder what your biggest influence is creatively?
OC: There is certainly no one person or group as a biggest influence, and there have been hundreds over the years since childhood. I have an amazing group of talented DJ and producer friends that certainly helps. I grew up on Classical music, then D.C. hardcore and punk rock, then metal, then guys like James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and all kinds of classic rock, jam bands, funk, jazz, and everything in between. It’s all added to the melting pot that has been my musical journey.
OTB: So the artists that influence you are all over the map genre-wise. Who would you say are the top three artists you are listening to right now? Top three tracks?
OC: Can I list 30 artists and tracks instead?! Three is way too small for me to narrow down but three out of the many I have been digging the last month or so. I usually only play tracks for maybe eight or so weeks before I move on to a brand new set of tracks, so they come and go quick!
OTB: How would you describe your sound?
OC: Clean, slowed down, stripped down Techno is what I’m best know for, but it’s all about the environment, the party, the vibe, the venue, the promoters, the time of day, who plays before you, who plays after you, etc. I like to pay attention to my surroundings and play the music and sound I love that best fits the party, whether its Techno, Minimal, Tech-House, etc.
OTB: So, how that’s a great segue to my next question: set preparation for shows, what is your process?
OC: I enjoy the spontaneity and creativity that comes out of improvising my sets on the fly. If I’m the opener, I’ll usually pre-select my opening track, but that’s about it.

OTB: Any plans for original tracks in the future?
OC: I’ve been working on some collaborations with some amazing producer friends of mine, you will definitely be seeing some originals come from that as well.
OTB: The dance music scene seems like it continues to grow in Washington, DC. You are based there, how has it changed recently, what is it like now?
OC: The D.C. scene is really thriving right now. We have some world-class clubs like U Street Music Hall (UHall) and Flash, as well as a bunch of other great spots throughout the city. Sundays in the Summer have some amazing rooftop parties. The underground scene has been great too, with all-night/morning parties popping up at random warehouses, art spaces, dance studios, etc. on a weekly basis bringing big crowds. It’s a great time for underground House and Techno in D.C. right now.
OTB: If you weren’t doing this what else would you be doing instead?
OC: If I wasn’t DJ’ing, I would still probably be playing drums in the metal band I was in. My DJ schedule got too busy, and I had to give it up. If I wasn’t DJ’ing, producing, playing bass or drums. Wow, I wouldn’t even know what to do with myself, maybe a snowboard instructor somewhere out west or in Switzerland.
OTB: If you could collaborate with one artist on a track who would it be and why?
OC: Once again, trying to pick one person would be extremely difficult, there’s too many talented people out there. But if I had to pick one that was well known, Chris Liebing would be up there for sure. I’ve always admired his attitude, drive, and clean, pristine, Techno that he layers so well.
OTB: Plans for the future? Long-term, short-term?
OC: For the future, I’m going to keep doing what I do best, and that’s having the best time possible playing music, and hope that others appreciate it along the journey. A live instrument/electronic project is also in the works.
