Behind the Beat: Kayzo

Hayden Capuozzo better known as Kayzo is a DJ and producer hailing from Houston, Texas. He got his start in the industry at age 24 when he was selected as the winner of Insomniac’s ‘Discovery Project’. From that moment on he’s been producing tracks and mixes with a very diverse sound that include everything from hardstyle, electro, dubstep to even a bit of psytrance.

Kayzo and I caught up for an interview a few days after his double set at Moonrise Festival in Baltimore, Maryland. He and Cesqeaux took the festival home with their surprise mainstage set filling in for Young Thug.

Only The Beat: When did you both start DJing and producing? Is it true that your first official gig was actually Escape from Wonderland after you won the Insomniac ‘Discovery Project’ contest?

Kayzo: I started producing back in 2012 when I went to Icon Collective and yea djing came second from winning the Discovery Project. I was thrown into djing 9 months into learning how to produce.

OTB: How would you describe your own unique style and sound?

K: For me it’s always been about doing what I felt was right. I’ve never been one to stick to one sound of style. Over the course of time I found a way to blend all the styles I loved with different tempos etc. the end result has kind of formed into this style and sound people resonate with my name.

OTB: Who influence your sound when you started and how has your sound changed over time? Do you have an mentors in the industry?

K: I really can’t say where my influence for sound came from to be honest. I can say that the reason I am so diverse is because when I was at Icon I decided to try producing a track in almost every style rather than stick to one style. That really helped me become more of a well-rounded producer and also opened me up to liking certain styles that I may have not enjoyed prior.

OTB: What is your favorite track that you produced and one that you did not produce, but admire?

K: I’d say that some of the unreleased music I have has been some of the most fun, but currently out I’d say ‘Born Again’ was a really fun one. It was really left field for me so being out of my comfort zone was a good experience. A track I did not produce would have to be Marshmello’s next single Ritual. The production is top notch and the vocal could be one of my favorites.

OTB: Earlier this year you were on tour with Carnage and Valentino Khan. How was that tour? Any crazy stories that you can share?

K: Hahaha. The tour was absolutely insane. All sold-out shows in massive venues. I had such an awesome time with those dudes. As for stories I won’t go into detail haha.

OTB: You recently released your own EP “Welcome To The Doghouse” in Spring ’16 through your own label ‘Doghouse Recordings’. What is it like to run your own record label in addition to producing, touring and DJing?

K: It’s been a great experience. I wanted to have total control of that EP. All the songs were so different from one another that I didn’t see them fitting on any one specific label. I didn’t want to break them up so after lots of planing the label was born. It’s gonna take some time to get it where I see it going but I couldn’t be more excited.

OTB: I saw your double header set b2b with Cesqueax at Lunar Stage at Moonrise Festival. What was this experience like from your perspective? How do you feel about your new track ‘Home’ with Cesqeaux?

K: Yea, that was wild. I was five minutes away from being done with my initial set and then my agent came up to be mid set and said that we were gonna immediately go to the Mainstage and fill in for Young Thug. It was so wild to go from one crazy set to and even larger crazy set. A memorable moment for sure. ‘Home’ could be one of my favorite tracks haha. Working with Cesqeaux was such a great time. He has become such a close friend and to be honest he may be one of the best producers and creatives in the game today.

OTB: What advice do you have for an aspiring DJ that is trying to get a shot in the industry?

K: I’ll keep it short. Do you. For starters. Don’t follow trends. There’s already someone out there doing that one trend etc. And to be honest it’s gonna be hard to top that person who already has there name in that lane. So make your own lane up.

OTB: What is the top personal milestone in your career so far?

K: I’d say show wise it’s been being able to play major festivals like EDC and HARD summer. Those were always goals of mine and being able to accomplish them has been really great.

OTB: Outside of Djing, what are your other interests or hobbies?

K: To be honest for me it’s been hanging out with my good friends who also DJ and produce. We don’t get much time off but when we do we like to go to movies, dinner, etc. pretty easy going stuff.

OTB: I read that you lived in Canada for a while and played hockey. Who is your favorite team?

K: Haha, yea I played hockey for 16 years. I also never really had a team but rather just favorite players. But they played on teams like the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and LA Kings.

OTB: What can we expect from you the rest of this year? Any new tracks or collaborations coming up?

K: Aside from the 15 new originals, I have a few collaborations in the works that I’m quite excited for. Also I have a remix EP of ‘Born Again’ coming out soon!
