Behind the Beat: Jay Hardway
We talk a lot about rising stars at Only The Beat and look to see who is going to be a breakout DJ/producer overtime. Dutch producer, DJ and drummer Jay Hardway has the potential to be a top headliner. He has done a lot of work with Martin Garrix including the hit “Wizard” along with other popular tracks “Registration Code” and “Error 404“.
Hardway has already had a powerful 2016 with collaborations with Bassjackers and his original “Stardust“. Only The Beat had the opportunity to catch up with him for an interview to get a better sense of where he comes from and where he is headed.
Only The Beat: When did you start Djing/producing? Where was your first official gig?
Jay Hardway: I started producing when I was 14 or 15 years old, in Fruity Loops. DJ’ing started after that, I think I was around 16 when I did a gig together with Bjorn van den Heuvel, who now is my camera guy and editor for ‘A Day With Jay’ (fun fact haha). My first solo gig was at ‘De Zeuve Lantaarns’ in the small town of Drunen, where I am from.
OTB: Who influenced your sound and how has it changed over time?
JH: There is a LOT of music which influenced me and my sound. I always loved melodies and chord progressions that are a little bit more complicated. I think that might have to do with my love for classical music. My sound is always changing every track. I always like to keep the melodies fresh and leading in every track.
OTB: How would you personally describe your sound and style?
JH: Musical, euphoric and energetic.
OTB: If you had to pick another career…?
JH: If I wasn’t dj’ing and making music, I think I would have started a career in making movies and videos. I always loved editing small videos and I’m always really involved in my music videos as well.
OTB: You just released your new single “Somnia”. Are you happy with how the track has been received so far?
JH: Very happy! The response has been super positive! I was really nervous before the release, but everyone’s reactions are very positive! The support from the fans is amazing, which shows that I can do more different styles in the future.

OTB: What are your top three favorite tracks of all-time?
JH: It’s too hard for me to choose my top three favorite tracks. It can be three certain tracks this week, and change next week again. My taste in music is changing constantly. 🙂
OTB: What is your favorite track that you personally produced?
JH: Electric Elephants. Loved making this and of course loved the response.
OTB: What advice do you have for aspiring DJs/producers?
JH: Make the music you love. Don’t try to re-create music but rather use other music as inspiration and reference for your own tracks. Always try something new. Doesn’t have to be a whole new genre, but just small things.
OTB: What is the top milestone in your careers so far?
JH: Wizard with Martin Garrix is still crazy for me. Everything went so fast from that track on.
OTB: Outside of DJing/producing, what are your other interests or hobbies?
JH: SLEEPING! haha and watching movies. I like to do as little as possible when I’m not working.
OTB: What can we expect from you for the rest of this year? Any new track or collaborations coming up?
JH: A bunch of new tracks and remixes in the coming months. Working on some interesting collaborations as well 🙂 More info very soon.
