Behind the Beat: Julian Jordan
21-year-old Dutch producer and DJ Julian Dobbenberg aka Julian Jordan, isn’t letting his young age affect his work in the music industry. From collaborations to original releases, he continues to develop as an artist and producer. His first ever mix complication album “It’s Julian Jordan” was released this past December which included several original tracks including ‘Memory’, ‘Midnight Dancers’ and more. 2016 was certainly a big year for him with the launch of his own imprint Goldkid Records.
Jordan shows no signs of stopping in 2017 with his recent release of Always. Only The Beat went Behind the Beat to see what he has in store for the rest of the year.
Only The Beat: When did you start DJing and producing?
Julian Jordan: I started producing around the age of 12. At five, I went to a music school every week. There I had the opportunity to learn many different instruments. We had to play a different instrument every week but I always went back to the drums. This is how I got my first interaction with music and where my passion for making music started.
OTB: Do you have any mentors in the industry? If so, how have they helped your career?
JJ: There are a lot of people who have inspired me to make music. I went to the Herman Brood Academy which is something that really helped me a lot. It was such a great, creative environment to be in.
OTB: If you had to pick another career?
JJ: If I weren’t a DJ, I would probably still be in college. I went to a music and arts school, but quit because I was already too busy with playing. However, I did really enjoy going to school since it was really good for my creative process. I am not a person who can sit in an office all day so I would definitely be doing something creative.
OTB: What makes Dutch dance music so influential throughout the world?
JJ: Dance music has been very big for a long time already in The Netherlands so I think that makes it very advanced here. It’s also a very small scene which makes it easier to meet other DJs and work together.
OTB: You just released the track “Always”. Can you tell us a little bit more about this track?
JJ: I wrote ‘Always’ together with CHOCO. I’ve known CHOCO for a long time and when we finally got together we made the track in a few days. I wanted to work on some different music and styles so we made different tracks and this one really stood out. That’s why we decided to release this one.
Julian Jordan x CHOCO – “Always”
JJ: It’s great to be able to work in the studio with other producers. You can learn from each other and inspire each other.
OTB: What is your favorite track that you’ve produced and one that you did not produce?
JJ: Daft Punk with ‘Around The World‘ is one of my favorite tracks ever. It’s such a classic and I’m a huge fan of their productions. My own favorite track is difficult to say since I have a lot of tracks with special memories attached to them. As for right now I would say my new track ‘Always’ is my current favorite!
OTB: Where do you see the dance music industry going in the next five years? New technology? Changes?
JJ: The music industry is always changing so there will probably be new trends within the dance music industry and probably some new technology too.
OTB: Outside of Djing, what are your other interests or hobbies?
JJ: I don’t really have time for other hobbies, but one of my interests is definitely collecting shoes, especially sneakers. A couple of years ago I always wanted to have limited editions, but nowadays I just buy shoes when I like them.
OTB: What can we expect from you coming up next year? Any new tracks or collaborations coming up?
JJ: There is lots of new music and gigs coming up, and I have a very exciting announcement in a couple of weeks, so stay tuned!
