Big Wild’s “Invincible” Is Unrestrained and Gorgeous

I was pretty surprised when I found out Big Wild is only one person. Any of the tracks that Massachusetts-born Jackson Stell produces would suggest a crew of musicians collaborating behind the wheel. There’s a complexity at the heart of his music that Stell has directly alluded to in interviews, speaking on his desire to explore sounds, experiment, and constantly push the limits of his productions and live performances. This transcendent style can even be felt in the name – Big Wild, originally inspired by a trip out to Big Sur on the Californian coast. Like all releases on Foreign Family Collective, the music weighs heavily on awakening an environment where you can coexist with the song. Whether that’s being lost in the wilderness of southern California or the watching the sun set on one of the Pacific Northwest’s unbeatable summers, this is the kind of music that’s created with the purpose of taking you to a physical and emotional destination.

“Invincible” marks the 12th release from Foreign Family Collective, and Odesza’s continued proficiency at uncovering wonderfully distinctive artists. Along for the ride is iDA HAWK, who you probably recognize from her regular stage appearances with buddy Griz and her gorgeous, soulful voice stolen straight from one of Gatsby’s extravagant parties. If Big Wild’s previous release “Aftergold” teased the playful adventure of midsummer nights, “Invincible” is the showstopper to the season. Loud and overwhelming, a diverse collection instruments come together and proclaim that while summer may be over, something much bigger is just on the horizon. And much like the building drums and demanding brass that overtake the speakers, iDA HAWK’s vocals are there to remind you that you are strong and once you recognize the power and vigor that lives inside of you, nothing is going to hold you back.

Raise your flag to this one, and as Jackson Stell says, “Keep it curious.”

I like catchy music and baby animals. One time I was on a Dutch documentary series about making it in Hollywood. I jump a lot when I dance.
