Bassgiving featuring Minnesota, G.Jones and Jackal
This week, Sunset SF is proud to present Bassgiving, featuring Minnesota, G.Jones and Jackal on Saturday (11/29/14) at Mezzanine SF. This trifecta of artists have been traveling across the country over the past few months for The Mind Machine Tour, and have finally decided to grace the Bay Area bass lovers with their performance. Showcasing a lineup so diverse, complimentary and innovative, the Mind Machine tour could possibly be one of the most revolutionary and artistically collaborative tours in bass music seen over the past couple of years. Minnesota, G Jones and Jackal have all paved the way in reinventing their sound, the way we look at bass music, and have continued to impress their fans with each and every new release. All three are known in their respective sub-genres of electronic dance music for being one of the most progressive and innovative producers. Knowing this, the chance to see all three in one sitting is an opportunity you should not pass up.
Christian Bauhofer, known by his fans as his party crushing alter ego Minnesota, is a producer and DJ heralding from Santa Cruz, CA that has been lighting up venues across the country with his frantic energy and pounding bass. At 23-years-old, Minnesota has recently spent his time touring with Big Gigantic while artists like Bassnectar and PANTyRAID have been incorporating his tracks into their sets. Minnesota is one of the most reinventive and proficient electronic producers to come out of the West Coast bass music movement. His sound breaks away from the various subgenres of EDM but holds onto origins of dubstep and hip-hop, creating a truly authentic experience for his audience.
“My goal is to make bass heavy dubstep/glitch-hop music that’ll get you dancing, but it is not the same old three note transformer step… I try to focus more on the melodic side of dubstep, and hopefully, make quality songwriting a more relevant factor in the genre.” Minnesota said this early on in his career, when he was describing the type of sound he was trying to make his own. For the past four years, Minnesota has followed through on his word and designed smooth, melodic, uplifting sounds, which fans have celebrated nationwide.
Santa Cruz producer, G Jones, has captivated young audiences across North America with his playful and expansive take on broken beat dance music. His live show weaves an ever expanding catalog of heavy knocking hip hop beats, cross-genre experiments and expansive melodic riffs in a way that illuminates and drives the dance floor. With his irreverent attitude toward unimaginative EDM, this young producer pushes the envelope and blurs the lines between musical styles while maintaining a meticulous balance of minimal space and heavy bass. This up-and-coming West Coast bass producer has captivated my heart and mind ever since I had the opportunity to experience his live performance with Minnesota at The Do Lab, Coachella 2014. This was probably the most unique performance I attended over the entire weekend. The two California natives teamed up and collaborated their unique genres to bring their audience a smooth, astral, hyphy, glitch hop-like bass sound, that almost blows your clothes off from the thunderous 808 sub-bass kick drums. When dancing, my body couldn’t decide if I should get low to the ground or blast off into outer space, and I loved every minute of it!
Mikey Pennington, best known by his artist name Jackal, is a 23-year-old music producer and DJ. Since the release of his track “Shakedown” Jackal’s presence in electronic dance music has quickly risen and continues to make an impression; his beats often finding their way into the sets of artists from Skrillex to Diplo. His tracks have also been remixed by artists such as LOUDPVCK and Jesse Slayter. Jackal is an artist that I haven’t had the chance to see live yet, but knowing how much I love each one of his tracks he has released thus far, I can count on his live performance being unforgettable.
To everyone in the Bay Area, if you want to have the time of your life while dancing your ass off to bass music this the event to attend. Doors open at 9:00 PM, hope to see you all there!!
